Marte Birnbaum has more than 20 years of progressive human service experience evolving from a front line worker into a management specialist serving vulnerable populations, especially persons with problems of substance abuse, mental health, co-occurring disorders, disabilities, domestic violence and those experiencing homelessness.

Prior to joining Gale Recovery, Inc., Marte directed the operations, programs and service delivery of a large community-based homeless shelter for men, women and children, which included street outreach, a hypothermia prevention program and medical services. She also developed and directed the Opportunity Place program for six years providing street outreach, case management and employment services to chronically homeless individuals.

Previously, Marte has worked as a program manager at a number of other distinguished agencies, including Reston Interfaith, The Arlington Street People’s Assistance Network, The Endependence Center of Northern Virginia, The Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry, and the Whitman Walker Clinic in Washington, D.C. She received her B.A. from George Washington University and her M.S.W. from Virginia Commonwealth University.  She later returned to the northern Virginia campus of VCU as an adjunct professor focusing on social welfare policy affecting families and poverty.  Marte is also a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in person-centered mission focus.
